Galmudug Assembly amends its provisional charter to appease Puntland
Lawmakers in the Galmudug regional assembly have made crucial changes in its provisional charter to the delight of Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud who hailed the move as heroic and step forward for reconciliation.
The assembly has amended article 2 of the charter which deals with the boundaries of Galmudug to address complains by Puntland State.
In the article, Galmudug boundaries are set on the Nugal region which is controlled by Puntland, that created friction between the two states. The assembly has now changed the boundary to Mudug region which is split between Galmudug and Puntland.
Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has welcomed the move noting it would help improve inter-states relations.
“The reason for state formation is to devolve government system to regional level and to facilitate service delivery; we welcome the amendment made by Galmudug parliament, “said the president.
Puntland is yet to comment on the new development.
