Government says it is ready to take over security responsibilities from ATMIS
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has said it is ready to take over the responsibility of securing the nation from the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
National Security Advisor to the President, Hussein Moalim said the planned drawdown of ATMIS troops will be implemented as earlier scheduled and that the second phase of the War against Alshabaab will be launched soon.
“The Somali Government is completely prepared to take over responsibility of our security from ATMIS. We intend to launch the second phase of the offensive operation against Al-Shabaab soon,” he said.
Hussein added that ATMIS forces’ withdrawal will be completed on December 30, 2024 according to the plan agreed.
He further announced that the United Nations Security Council will lift the arms embargo imposed on Somalia by November, a move that will enable for the government to import weapons needed to enable the country’s security forces to adequately secure the nation.
