Authorities in Balad Hawo, Gedo near the Kenya border are planning to publicly execute a soldier who killed a peasant yesterday.
The soldier killed Mohamed Abdi, a peasant, at Gawito locality just 3 KM from the town Balad Hawo and also wounded another person.
Under Somali customary law in conjunction with Sharia law, any person who kills another would be executed immediately if sworn eyewitnesses tell a jury of traditional elders that they saw him committing the crime. Paying blood money is also an option if the family of the deceased person accepts it.
The immediate kin of the deceased will carry out the execution in public, rather than firing squad, and this is facilitated by the government.
