GOOBJOOG NEWS|JOWHAR: HirShabelle State parliament has amended its constitution which now effectively hands the newly elected president Ali Guudlawe five years in office contrary to four in the current law.
Out of 70 MPs present today, 66 voted in favour of the amendment which in effect adds an extra year to the term of the executive and parliament. Only three lawmakers cast a contrary opinion while one abstained.
Guudlaawe who is now the third president of HirShabelle was elected last month in a controversial vote which opposition groups said was largely influenced by the Federal Government.
Rebellion has been building up in Hiiraan regions which rejected Guudlaawe’s election on grounds that it (Hiiraan) should have produced the president based on rotational clan arrangements.
HirShabelle now joins Puntland whose Constitution sets the term of president to five years.
