HISTORIC: Queues build up in Eyl, Ufweyn and Qardho for council elections

Long lines have been forming in since 6am local time as voters in Eyl, Qardo and Ufweyn districts in Puntland turned up for the historic one person one vote district council elections.
The pilot vote will take place in the three districts and is expected to pave way for a statewide poll in early next year. The voters will be picking councilors who will represent them in their respective district councils.
Today’s exercise is the first in Somalia in over 50 years. Attempts to conduct a universal vote for Federal parliamentary elections this year failed forcing the country to resort to the clan based system.
