IGAD Urges Restraint As Somalia’s Federal–South West Dispute Escalates
GOOBJOOG NEWS|DJIBOUTI: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development has called for calm and dialogue in Somalia amid rising tensions between the Federal Government and the South West State administration, following a sharp escalation in their ongoing dispute.
In a statement issued on March 29 from Djibouti, IGAD said it is closely monitoring developments in South West State and expressed concern over the deteriorating situation. The regional bloc urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions.
The appeal comes on the same day the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) issued unprecedented accusations against South West State President Abdicasiis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen and other senior officials, alleging direct links with the militant group Al-Shabaab. The claims mark a significant escalation in the standoff, which has intensified following Laftagareen’s controversial re-election on Friday—rejected by Mogadishu as unconstitutional.
IGAD emphasized that disputes between the federal government and member states should be resolved through inclusive dialogue and established national mechanisms, underscoring the need to preserve institutional cohesion at a time of heightened political and security pressure.
The situation is particularly sensitive given that parts of South West State—especially Bay and Bakool regions—remain strongholds of Al-Shabaab. Analysts warn that the growing political rift, coupled with serious allegations from the federal government, could undermine coordination between federal and regional forces, potentially weakening joint counterterrorism operations.
IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace, stability, and unity, stating it stands ready to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation efforts between the two sides.
The latest developments highlight the fragile balance between Somalia’s federal structure and security priorities, with both political legitimacy and counterinsurgency efforts now at risk of being further strained.
