Israel Appoints First Ambassador To Somaliland Following Historic Recognition
GOOBJOOG NEWS|TEL AVIV: Israel has appointed its first-ever ambassador to Somaliland, marking a significant step in formalizing diplomatic ties months after its controversial recognition of the breakaway region.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Wednesday approved the appointment of Michael Lotem as Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland.
Lotem, a veteran diplomat who has previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, will initially serve in a non-resident capacity, reflecting the early stage of diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
Comes After Landmark Recognition
The appointment follows Israel’s decision in December 2025 to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state—becoming the first United Nations member to do so.
That move marked a major shift in regional diplomacy and was followed by high-level engagements, including a visit by Sa’ar to Somaliland and meetings between Israeli and Somaliland leaders on the sidelines of international forums.
Growing Diplomatic Exchange
The ambassadorial appointment is part of a broader exchange of diplomatic representation between the two sides. In February 2026, Israel accepted the credentials of Somaliland’s first ambassador to Israel, further cementing bilateral ties.
Analysts view the reciprocal appointments as a transition from symbolic recognition to operational diplomacy, with cooperation expected in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and water management.
Regional and Political Implications
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland—and the subsequent diplomatic steps—have drawn strong opposition from Somalia and concern from the African Union, which warn the move could undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity and set a precedent for separatist regions.
Despite the backlash, both Israel and Somaliland have continued to deepen ties, framing the relationship as strategic, particularly given Somaliland’s location along the Red Sea corridor.
The appointment of an ambassador is widely seen as a key milestone, signaling Israel’s intent to establish a lasting diplomatic presence and expand cooperation with Somaliland.
