Six Al-Shabaab militants killed in US airstrike in Barawe, southern Somalia
Six Al-Shabaab militants were killed in US airstrikes Wednesday in Barawe, the African Command and Somali officials have said.
In a statement Wednesaday, the US African Command said the its forces conducted three precision airstrikes agains Al-Shabaab at 2am local time.
“The operation occured in southern Somalia, about 260 kilometres south of the capital, Mogadishu,” Africom said.
Adan Omar Madobe, the Commissioner of Barawe town confirmed the attacks to the media stating no civilians were caught in the operations and the attacks were solely aimed at four camps belonging to Al-Shabaab fighters.
“Yes last night at 2am there were bombardments in Kunya Barrow which went on till 5am in the morning” said Commissioner Madobe.
Kunya Barrow, a remote location in Lower Shabelle region which is 100 km from Barawa town is the epicenter of the military action and the attack is said to have inflicted a high toll on AlShabaab during the security operations though no official number is known.
“It was a joint military operation between Somali commandos and foreign soldiers. As usual when they [Al-Shabaab] sustain heavy casualties, they put off communication antennas. It was camps earlier deserted by them which are now destroyed,” said Madobe
