Over 100 Al-Shabaab militants killed in three federal states- Somali government

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A statement by the federal government has said over 100 Alshabab militants were killed in a series of operations carried out by the Somali National Army with the support of regional security forces and local communities in Galmudug, HirShabelle, and Southwest States.

The statement further said that the military operation helped liberate up to twenty towns in the aforementioned states from the Al-Qaeda-linked group, which has been using these towns as strongholds for organizing terrorist attacks to be later executed in different parts of the country.

 “Local public revolutions assisted by the government to liberate Alshabab controlled areas have been caused by the continuous atrocities by the terrorist group on the local civilians,” added the statement.

Some of the towns said to be liberated in the ongoing operation include, Hiran region: Bergadid, Ba’da, Tedan, Gobo, Bardhere, Tiroshane yo Omad. Galgudud region: Adabir, Marsagame, Dhumodle iyo Al-Wald. Bay region: Madabun, El-a-helay, Makini, Hobal-daranle, Iskine, Qanyarey, Borami, and Bagay iyo Kayow.

The operation also helped rescue vulnerable people and civilians who had been kidnapped by members of the group.

The government expressed its gratitude to the local army for stepping up to fight alongside government forces to free their communities and towns from the terrorist organization and vowed to continue operations to eliminate the terrorist group, which is one of the greatest threats to the Somal people.
