GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has praised the conduct of Djibouti’s recent presidential election as peaceful and stable during a phone call with President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Barre congratulated Guelleh on his re-election and commended the people of Djibouti for what he described as an orderly and calm electoral process.

His remarks follow Friday’s vote, in which Guelleh secured a sixth term after winning about 97.8% of the vote, according to official results, extending his rule since 1999.

The election was largely uncontested, with major opposition groups boycotting the process and only one lesser-known candidate participating, reflecting long-standing concerns over political competition in the country.

Lawmakers had earlier removed the presidential age limit, allowing Guelleh, 78, to run again, while authorities reported voter turnout of around 80% and described the vote as peaceful.

Djibouti’s elections are closely watched in the Horn of Africa due to the country’s strategic position along major global shipping routes and its role as a regional security hub hosting multiple foreign military bases.

Barre also wished Guelleh success in his new term, expressing confidence in his leadership as the region navigates security and economic challenges.
