President Bihi announces voter registration amid row with opposition over delayed polls

GOOBJOOG NEWS|HARGEISA: Somaliland President Muse Bihi has said registration of new voters will start at the end of this amidst an ongoing row with the opposition over the delay of elections by two more years.

A statement from the presidency noted that registration of new voters will kick off on December 28, 2022 but did not indicate when the exercise will come to a close.

Somaliland was supposed to election a new president in November when the term of the current president lapsed. However, the controversial House of Elders passed a voted that added Bihi two more years in office.

The opposition protected the move and demanded that the House of Elders decision be rescinded.

The break-away region held parliamentary and local council elections on May 2021 after several delays since the then parliament was elected in 2005.
