President Mohamud Breaks Ground on Gateway Complex, Pioneering Development in Mogadishu

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud today led a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gateway Complex, a landmark masterplanned development poised to transform Somalia’s capital. The event took place at the Bancario Complex on Airport Road, drawing a high-level audience of senior government officials, business leaders, and Members of Parliament.

Among the attendees were the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, the Minister of Information and Tourism, and the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia. Prominent private sector representatives included the Chairman of Riverside Holding—the project’s developer—and the Chairman of the Somali Chamber of Commerce.

The Gateway Complex is set to introduce Somalia’s first five-star hotel, managed by the globally recognized Rotana hospitality group, and an international convention centre capable of hosting up to 5,000 attendees. Plans also feature premium hotel apartments, a 300-bed modern hospital, a leading school, a vibrant shopping complex, residential units, and recreational facilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mohamud underscored the project’s significance for Somalia’s future:

“The Gateway Complex reflects Somalia’s readiness to embrace a brighter future. It symbolizes progress, unity, and opportunity for our people, offering world-class facilities and attracting both local and international investors. This is a milestone moment for Mogadishu and our nation.”

Riverside Holding’s Chairman echoed these sentiments:

“Gateway is not just a development; it is a statement of confidence in Somalia’s potential. This project will generate jobs, attract investment, and provide essential services, raising the standard of living for all.”

The Gateway Complex is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and ongoing operations. Once completed, it aims to position Mogadishu as a competitive regional hub for business, healthcare, tourism, and urban living.

The ceremony concluded with a presentation outlining the development’s comprehensive plans, followed by the symbolic turning of the soil—signalling the official start of construction.
