President Mohamud Announces 90-Day Amnesty for Militant Defectors
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has announced a 90-day amnesty for individuals linked to extremist groups, offering a pathway for defections and reintegration into society.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the initiative targets those who were coerced into joining militant organisations, particularly young people.
“I am announcing a peace appeal and a 90-day amnesty for youth and leadership members of Al-Shabaab and ISIS,” he said.
The federal government says the measure is aimed at weakening groups such as Al-Shabaab and Islamic State by encouraging defections while promoting reconciliation.
The government said the programme will allow eligible individuals to return to civilian life and contribute to national development.
The move is part of a broader strategy combining military operations with rehabilitation efforts to reduce the influence of extremist networks.
