President Mohamud Hails AU’s Role in Somalia’s Security

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to eradicating terrorism while commending the African Union (AU) for its crucial role in supporting peacekeeping, state-building, and stabilization efforts in the country.

In a high-level meeting on Sunday with African Union officials led by Chairperson Mohamud Ali Youssouf, President Mohamud discussed strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing strategic cooperation between Somalia and the AU.

The talks covered counterterrorism, regional stability, and Somalia’s active participation in AU reforms.

“The African Union has played a vital role in Somalia’s progress. We deeply appreciate the courage and sacrifice of AU peacekeepers in our country, and we are committed to strengthening our collaboration,” President Mohamud stated.

He praised the African Union for its continued support in weakening the Al-Shabaab terrorist group and assisting Somalia in reclaiming territories from militant control.

The president credited African Union forces for their bravery and commitment, noting that their presence has reinforced Somalia’s security framework and accelerated efforts toward self-reliance in defense.

President Mohamud also emphasized the broader contributions of the AU beyond military intervention, highlighting its involvement in governance and stabilization initiatives in liberated areas, helping to restore essential services and local administration.

“Terrorism has no place to hide in Somalia,” the president declared. “It has been rejected by the land and the people. God willing, we will succeed in completely eradicating it. We will not tolerate their plots, looting, and massacre of our people.”

He further expressed Somalia’s readiness to actively contribute to the AU’s reform agenda, sharing lessons from its own state-building journey with other post-conflict nations on the continent.
