President’s envoy on drought attends humanitarian forum in Brussels
GOOBJOOG NEWS | BRUSSELS: Somalia’s special envoy in charge of drought emergency MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame is attending a humanitarian forum in Brussels, Belgium that kicked off on Monday.
The forum which is jointly organized by the European Commission and the Swedish Government – which currently holds the leadership of the EU council deliberated on growing global humanitarian needs and finding solutions to such challenges.
MP Abdirahman while thanking the international community for its continued support for Somalia noted that donations alone will not offer a lasting solution to the country’s drought problems but there is a need to focus on investing in projects that empower the community and spur development.
He further stressed the urgency in supporting Somalia to tap into its natural resources as a way of mitigating the challenges facing its people.
The European Union together with its member states has announced that it will disburse €8.4 billion in humanitarian aid in 2023 to address global humanitarian needs.
The announcement comes at a time when global humanitarian needs have reached unprecedented levels with about 339 million people (1 in every 23 people globally) in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
The war in Ukraine, rising global food prices, and the effects of climate change have exacerbated the situation, and the European Humanitarian Forum is focusing on how to address these challenges through high-level dialogue and presenting sustainable approaches
