PM Barre Appoints High-Powered Commission to Crush Al-Shabaab and ISIS

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: In a decisive move against terrorism, Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has announced the formation of a National Committee to Support the Fight Against terrorist groups, focusing on dismantling Al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia.

This high-level task force, led by Second Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, brings together top government officials and security experts in a unified, whole-of-government effort to eradicate extremist groups.

The committee includes key figures such as Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Hosh, Environment Minister Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, Health Minister Dr. Ali Hajji Adan, State Minister for Internal Security Mohamed Ali Hagaa, Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Ahmed Amir, and Disaster Management Commissioner Mohamud Moalim Hassan.

Their combined expertise signals a multi-pronged strategy addressing military, financial, ideological, and governance aspects of the counterterrorism fight.

This national initiative aims to intensify military operations, bolster the Somali National Army (SNA) and regional forces, and disrupt the financial lifelines of terrorist networks.

Additionally, it will lead counter-extremism campaigns focused on deradicalization and community resilience while strengthening intelligence-sharing and law enforcement coordination.

The involvement of Mogadishu’s mayor and disaster management officials underscores the government’s broader vision—ensuring stability in liberated areas and preventing extremist resurgence.

Somalia has made significant territorial gains against Al-Shabaab, particularly in Hirshabelle and Galmudug states, but the threat remains critical. With national elections on the horizon, the committee’s work is pivotal in ensuring long-term security.

Its first meeting is expected soon, where operational strategies and resource mobilization efforts will be finalized, reinforcing the government’s unwavering commitment to defeating terrorism.
