Puntland demands end to voter registration by Somaliland in Sanaag

GOOBJOOG NEWS|SANAAG:    An ongoing voter registration by Somaliland authorities in the contested region of Sanaag has attracted a backlash from Puntland which has warned against the process.

For two days now, officials from Somaliland have been conducting voter registration in Dhahar district located in Sanaag region but administrators from the Puntland side have demanded the exercise be halted and warned action against those involved.

Both Puntland and Somaliland lay claim to Sool and Sanaag which have become flashpoints in recent years leading to deadly fighting.

Close to 50 people were killed in 2018 when forces from both sides clashed in Tukaraq village located in Sool region.
