Senator Fartag: 790 Somali homes have been cut off to the Kenyan border side

Nearly 800 homes belonging to Somalis living in the border town of Beled-hawo with Kenya have been added to the Kenyan side through the wall constructed by its neighbouring country.

Addressing the federal Upper House today during a briefing session, Senator Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartag who was among the federal officials who visited the town 2 days ago expressed his dismay pointing out that Kenya has committed violations on the site they erected the wall taking with them 790 homes belong to the Somalis in an area not yet demarcated between them which Somalia currently does not recognize.

“As it was confirmed to us by the officials, local administrations and the traditional elders of Beled-Hawo border town, the 6km wall built starting from the river has taken up nearly 790 houses to the Kenyan side in an international border area which Somalia does not recognize. Which side does the border site taken belongs to? Us or them?

On early May 2015 Kenya started erecting the border wall with Somali amid protests from the Horn of African nation.

July 2015, Somali government has officially filed a court case on maritime border dispute with Kenya at the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
