GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia has appointed a new commander for a frontline army unit in South West State, as it seek to strengthen military operations amid rising political tensions in the region.

The command of the Somali National Army removed Adan Mohamed Nur (Afey), from leadership of the 154th Battalion under the 8th Brigade, 60th Division, and appointed Mursal Ali Mohamed as his replacement.

Mursal, who previously served within the same unit, is expected to ensure continuity in operations and strengthen command effectiveness in the field.

The outcome of the reshuffle is aimed at reinforcing frontline leadership and sustaining pressure on Al-Shabaab in Bay region, where security operations have intensified.

The 154th Battalion is based in Diinsoor district, a key area in ongoing efforts to stabilise parts of South West State.

The leadership change comes amid an escalating standoff between the Federal Government of Somalia and the South West administration, which has seen increased troop movements in recent days.

A day earlier, the federal government appointed a new local administration in Waajid district in neighbouring Bakool region, in what was described as efforts to strengthen governance and public administration.

The latest measures reflect a broader push to improve security coordination and governance structures, though the situation in South West State remains fluid.
