Somali Army Leaders Mark Anniversary with Praise for Gains and Call For Reform
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali National Army top leaders have highlighted recent battlefield gains against Al-Shabaab while calling for deeper reforms and sustained investment in the force, during remarks at the 66th anniversary gala in Mogadishu.
Army Commander Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud said the past year had seen notable progress in coordinated operations against militant groups, crediting the resilience of Somali troops and improved operational capacity.
He said maintaining momentum would be critical as the military continues its campaign, while paying tribute to soldiers killed in action and describing their sacrifice as central to Somalia’s security progress. He also noted ongoing efforts to support families of fallen troops, particularly orphans.
Other speakers at the event said the army must continue to evolve into a more professional and self-reliant force, calling for increased investment in training, equipment and leadership development.
The remarks reflected both recognition of recent gains and acknowledgment of long-term challenges as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen its security institutions and counter insurgent threats.
