Somali National Convicted By Kenyan Court Over Al-Shabaab Links
GOOBJOOG NEWS|NAIROBI: A Kenyan court has convicted a Somali national on multiple terrorism-related charges linked to Al-Shabaab, in a case prosecutors said involved recruitment and radicalisation activities.
The Kahawa Law Courts found Abdikarim Hassanow Hassan guilty under Kenya’s Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, over offences committed in Migori County.
Prosecutors told the court the accused was an active member of the group and played a role in recruiting and indoctrinating individuals, including a minor, to join the militant network.
According to court proceedings, the suspect lured the minor with promises of financial incentives, training and religious motivations, and later facilitated plans for travel to Somalia.
The prosecution said he also provided logistical support, including guidance on routes and financial assistance, as part of the recruitment process.
In her ruling, Magistrate Ombewa said the evidence presented demonstrated a pattern of facilitation and radicalisation beyond reasonable doubt.
“I find that the prosecution established… facilitation, ideological indoctrination, and preparation,” the magistrate said, adding that the accused acted as a recruiter and financier within the network.
The case will be mentioned on April 20, when the court is expected to set a date for sentencing.
