Somalia Condemns Israel Move on Somaliland, Urges Reversal
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has condemned Israel’s reported appointment of a diplomatic representative to Somaliland, calling the move a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement, the federal government said the decision contravenes international law, including the United Nations Charter and African Union principles, which recognise Somalia as a single, sovereign state within its internationally accepted borders.
Mogadishu said it “categorically rejects” any attempt to grant diplomatic or political recognition to any part of its territory outside the authority of the federal government, reiterating that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia.
The development comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions following Israel’s recent steps seen as signalling recognition of Somaliland, a breakaway region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognised by the international community.
Somalia has in recent months intensified its diplomatic outreach to rally support for its territorial integrity, receiving backing from several countries and regional blocs that oppose any unilateral recognition of Somaliland.
Officials warned that such actions risk undermining ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions, advance reconciliation and combat militancy, and could destabilise progress in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia called on Israel to reconsider the decision and respect its sovereignty, while urging international partners, including the African Union, United Nations and other multilateral organisations, to reject moves that could legitimise secessionist claims.
The government said it would continue to defend its unity and sovereignty through diplomatic and legal channels.
