Somalia Gains Ground in Global Human Rights Framework at Geneva Forum
GOOBJOOG NEWS | GENEVA: Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission has said its participation in the General Assembly of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions has strengthened its position within the global human rights system, marking a key step for Somalia.
Attending the meeting at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva for the first time, the commission said the forum enabled it to engage with international partners and align with global standards on human rights governance.
Officials, led by the commission’s Chairperson Maryan Qaasim said the assembly’s approval of GANHRI’s 2026 work plan and budget would support capacity-building, strengthen institutional independence and enhance cooperation among national human rights bodies.
They added that the engagement is expected to bolster Somalia’s efforts to consolidate its human rights framework, improve credibility at the international level and expand partnerships with organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme.
This s seen as an important step toward reinforcing oversight, promoting accountability and advancing protections for citizens as Somalia continues its broader governance reforms.
