Somalia Launches Welfare Support for Families of Fallen Soldiers
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday launched a new welfare initiative for families of fallen soldiers, marking the 66th anniversary of the Somali National Army with a focus on social support for military families.
The president, accompanied by Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and army chief Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, laid the foundation stone for the headquarters of the Somali National Army Orphans Care Agency in Mogadishu.
The agency, approved by the cabinet, is designed to provide education, care and long-term welfare support to children of soldiers killed in the line of duty.
The initiative is aimed at recognising the sacrifices of military personnel while strengthening institutional support for their families, particularly children left behind by the conflict.
The move comes as the government continues efforts to rebuild and professionalise the armed forces amid ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab, which has lost territory in recent military campaigns.
Alongside the welfare launch, Somalia held a military parade in the capital, showcasing troops and equipment as part of the annual commemoration of the army’s founding in 1960.
The combined events reflected both remembrance of past sacrifices and a renewed focus on improving the welfare and resilience of Somalia’s security forces.
