Somalia Steps Up Anti-Al-Shabaab Drive with Fresh Victories in Hiiraan Region

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces, in coordination with local militias, have launched a successful offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in the Aboorey area of the Hiiraan region, military officials said.

The joint operation forced the militants to retreat after they had infiltrated the area. Pursuit operations are now underway to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping, the officials further stated.

The assault is part of a broader, sustained military campaign targeting Al-Shabaab strongholds across central Somalia. In recent days, Somali National Army operations have also intensified around Runirgood district and in the areas of Guulane, Ceel Cali Axmed in Middle Shabelle, as well as the corridor between Buulo-Burde and Jalalaqsi in Hiiraan.

Security sources say Al-Shabaab has suffered “significant losses” as a result of these coordinated operations, as government forces continue to apply military pressure aimed at weakening the group’s operational capabilities.

Al-Shabaab, which is designated a terrorist organization by Somalia, the United Nations, the United States, and others, has waged an insurgency for over a decade. The Somali government’s current campaign is part of a broader effort to reclaim territory and restore stability in key regions.
