GOOBJOOG NEWS | ISTANBUL: Somalia and Turkey have agreed to expand cooperation in energy, security and infrastructure following talks between their presidents in Istanbul.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Dolmabahçe Palace, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and accelerating joint projects.

The two sides agreed to advance cooperation in Somalia’s energy sector, including the launch of offshore exploration activities following the recent deployment of a Turkish drilling vessel to Somali waters.

President Mohamud said Turkish support has played a significant role in the country’s security, infrastructure development and public service delivery, as Mogadishu seeks to rebuild after decades of conflict.

The talks come amid growing momentum in Somalia’s efforts to develop its natural resources sector, which the government sees as critical to boosting revenues and reducing reliance on external support.

Turkey has been one of Somalia’s closest partners over the past decade, investing in major infrastructure projects, managing key facilities such as Mogadishu’s port and airport, and providing training and support to Somali security forces.

The meeting also follows increased regional focus on energy exploration in the Horn of Africa and the wider Indian Ocean, with Somalia aiming to position itself as an emerging player in the sector.

Both sides aim to translate the partnership into increased investment and economic growth, while maintaining close coordination on security and development priorities.
