GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A new global population report indicates that Somalia has recorded significant demographic growth in 2026, placing it among the fastest-growing countries in Africa.

According to the data, Somalia’s population has reached approximately 20.3 million, with an annual growth rate estimated at 3.31%. This positions the country as the fourth fastest-growing in Africa in terms of population increase.

Only Niger, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo rank ahead, each recording slightly higher or comparable growth rates.

However, in terms of fertility rate—defined as the average number of children born per woman—Somalia ranks second on the continent, behind only Niger. In summary, Somalia is fourth in population growth rate but second in fertility levels.

This rapid increase has also elevated Somalia’s global standing, placing it 66th among the world’s most populous countries, surpassing several nations that previously ranked higher in economic and political terms.

Globally, the report notes that India remains the most populous country, with an estimated 1.476 billion people, followed by China with approximately 1.412 billion.

Experts caution that while Somalia’s rapid population growth could offer opportunities for economic and social development if effectively managed, it also presents significant challenges. These include increased pressure on essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment.
