Somaliland polls team says senate candidates to address delegates today

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somaliland State Indirect Elections Team (SIET) has announced it will resume its electoral calendar following an earlier indefinite delay of the electoral exercise.

“The Electoral Commission of the Northern Regions of Somaliland would like to inform all the candidates registered for the Upper House elections in Somaliland that tomorrow, 28-09-2021 (Tuesday) the official speeches will begin,” a statement from SIET read in part.

The polls body on Sunday called off the exercise planned for Monday amid allegations a meeting between outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo and elders from Somaliland may have necessitated the delay. Farmaajo has previously been accused of seeking to influence the Somaliland electoral process.

Voting was expected to start today according to an earlier schedule. SIET did not indicate when the exercise will kick off in its latest communication.
