Supreme Court Validates Banadir Local Council Election Results Amid Opposition Boycott

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Supreme Court of Somalia has formally upheld the results of the Banadir local council elections, issuing a final ruling that confirms the outcome despite a boycott by key opposition groups.
The decision follows a judicial review of the electoral process and legal petitions challenging the vote. In its verdict, the court found that the elections were conducted in accordance with the law and existing frameworks governing local government polls.
The ruling effectively endorses the preliminary results earlier announced by the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), clearing the way for the formation of local councils across Banadir. It also marks a significant step toward establishing local leadership elected directly by residents in the capital.
Opposition parties had declined to participate in the elections, raising concerns over the process and political environment. However, the court dismissed post-election complaints, stating that there was insufficient evidence to invalidate the results or question the integrity and transparency of the exercise.
With the legal process now concluded, the newly elected council members are expected to be sworn in in the coming days. This will be followed by the انتخاب of district-level leadership and the broader regional administration.
