GOOBJOOG NEWS|GAROWE: Tension remains high in Puntland following the ongoing row over the upcoming district council elections as opposition forces and government machinery allied to outgoing president Abdullahi Deni maintain their armed positions.

Opposition-backed forces have reportedly blocked ballot boxes from being distributed in parts of Nugaal region just three days before the elections. Sources further say the opposition forces are stationed in various parts of the administrative capital, Garowe.

Efforts to resolve the disputes appeared not to have made any headways as both Deni and opposition figures maintain a tough stance. On Sunday, the Forum for Opposition Parties insisted the May 25 elections should be suspended to allow room for dialogue. They further noted that Deni had refused offers for talks.

Deni has continued with campaigns for his KAAH party and candidates in various parts of the state as the stalemate persists. The opposition has accused Deni of seeking to manipulate the upcoming district council elections with the intention of extending his stay in power after his term lapses next January.

The opposition has also warned against proposed constitutional reviews by the Deni administration noting this was also a ploy to ensure the outgoing leader continues his stay in power.
