The Speakers of the Parliament appoint an ad hoc committee to review the constitution
The leaders of the two houses has issued separate statements to appoint members of the parliament who are assigned to review the articles of the constitution for amendment and give back advice to the speakers of the chambers.
The first deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Sadiyo Samatar, who is the acting chairperson of the House, issued a letter appointing 10 members of the House and saying that they would provide recommendations for amending the provisional constitution. The assigned committee will submit their recommendation to the speakers of the People’s Assembly.
Similarly, the Deputy Speaker of the Upper House, Ali Shacban, who is the Acting Speaker, has issued a letter appointing 10 members of the Senate who will analyze the possible changes in the terms of office of the Parliament and the President. The total number of nominated members are 20 from both houses.
In recent weeks, there has been a campaign led by MPs to change the terms of office of the parliament and the president.
Opposition politicians say that the hidden plan is to extend the term of the president in office, the executive branch, and the parliament.
The term of office of the parliament and the president is 4 years, starting from the day of the election, as the provisional constitution mentions.
