Turkey’s Drillship Arrives in Somalia for First Offshore Oil Exploration
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A Turkish drilling vessel has arrived in Somalia’s waters to begin the country’s first offshore oil exploration campaign, in a move that could mark a turning point for its energy sector.
The Çağrı Bey Drillship is expected to dock at the Port of Mogadishu on April 10, launching exploration activities aimed at assessing Somalia’s offshore hydrocarbon potential.
The project reflects deepening cooperation between Turkey and Somalia, and is part of broader efforts to develop the country’s largely untapped natural resources.
The offshore exploration is also expected to support the country’s economic growth, create jobs and generate new revenue streams if commercially viable reserves are confirmed.
The development comes after Somalia in recent years passed key petroleum laws and signed exploration agreements aimed at attracting foreign investors, as it seeks to rebuild its economy after decades of conflict and institutional collapse.
It also follows expanded economic and security ties with Turkey, which has become one of Somalia’s key international partners, investing in infrastructure, training security forces and supporting state-building efforts.
Analysts say offshore exploration represents a high-risk but potentially high-reward venture, with success dependent on security conditions, regulatory stability and sustained international investment.
