Vote counting underway in Somaliland, results ‘within three days’
GOOBJOOG NEWS|HARGEISA: Vote counting in the just concluded elections in Somaliland is underway with authorities indicating results will be out within three days.
Somaliland National Elections Commission (SLNEC) noted the ballots from all the 23 districts were being counted following the closure of polls Monday evening. Slightly over one million people registered to vote in the parliamentary and local government elections.
There were 552 candidates for local government seats while 246 candidates squared it out for the 82 seats in the House of Representatives. The last parliamentary election happened in 2005.
Out of the 246 candidates for the House race, 13 were women. Yesterday’s election was the seventh round since Somaliland broke away in 1991. Three presidential elections in 2002, 2010 and 2017 have happened in Somaliland.
Two local council elections took place in 2003 and 2012.
