Somali National Appointed to Senior UN Humanitarian Leadership Role
GOOBJOOG NEWS|NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Mohamed Yahya of Somalia as the new Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The appointment places Yahya in one of the United Nations’ most senior humanitarian leadership positions, where he will help oversee global emergency response efforts and humanitarian operations in crisis-affected regions.
The Federal Government of Somalia welcomed the appointment, describing it as a source of national pride and recognition of the country’s growing contribution to international leadership.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Omar congratulated Yahya on his appointment, saying it was well deserved.
“Congratulations to Mr. Mohamed Yahya on this well-deserved appointment. Somalia is proud to see one of its distinguished sons entrusted with a senior UN humanitarian leadership role. We wish him every success as he advances OCHA’s vital mission in support of people in need worldwide,” the minister said.
