Allies Rally behind Somalia, Condemn Israel Somaliland Decision
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A group of foreign ministers from Africa, the Middle East and Asia have condemned Israel’s reported plan to appoint a diplomatic representative to Somaliland, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a joint statement, ministers from Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Türkiye, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kuwait, Mauritania, Jordan and Oman said the move undermined Somalia’s unity and breached international law.
“The ministers express their strongest condemnation… which is considered a flagrant violation of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the statement said.
They reaffirmed their rejection of unilateral actions that infringe on the sovereignty of states and voiced support for Somalia’s federal government as the sole legitimate authority representing the Somali people.
The ministers also warned that such steps risk setting a precedent that could destabilise the Horn of Africa, urging respect for international frameworks including the United Nations Charter and the African Union’s founding principles.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia, but has not gained widespread international recognition, with Mogadishu maintaining that the region remains part of its territory.
The statement reflects growing diplomatic backing for Somalia’s position amid heightened sensitivities over external engagement with Somaliland, as the federal government seeks to safeguard its territorial integrity while expanding international partnerships.
