Cabinet Approves Four Appointees to Supreme Judicial Council

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of four members to the country’s Supreme Judicial Council, marking a key step in implementing the provisions of the 2026 Federal Constitution aimed at strengthening the judiciary.
The appointments were approved by a majority vote during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, following a proposal from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
The four nominees include two senior lawyers and two legal experts who will serve five-year terms once their appointments complete the required approval procedures. They are Mohamed-Deeq Macallin Aadan, Maryan Sheikh Osman, Abdirisaaq Mohamed Ismail and Abdikadir Ali Macallin.
According to the government, the appointments were made under Article 145 of Somalia’s 2026 Federal Constitution, which outlines the composition of the Supreme Judicial Council.
The remaining members of the council will serve by virtue of their offices. They include the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Attorney General, the presidents of the appellate courts of Somalia’s federal member states and the Banadir Regional Administration, as well as the Chairperson of the Independent Human Rights Commission.
During the same session, the Cabinet dismissed the Chairperson of the Higher Education Council and appointed Mahmud Ahmed Jimcaale as the new head of the body.
The ministers also approved a draft law on culture and the arts, a bilateral agreement between Somalia and Oman on cooperation in air transport, and endorsed the African Youth Charter, which seeks to promote youth participation in political decision-making and strengthen the role of African governments in advancing youth development.
The decisions were announced by the Office of the Prime Minister following Thursday’s Cabinet meeting in Mogadishu.
