Cholera kills three people near Beledweyne town
Three people have died after a cholera outbreak at Far-libah village which lies 45 km west of Beledweyne town of Somalia’s central region, Hiraan.
Some 15 other patients suffering from cholera have been admitted at Far-libah Hospital.
The director of Hospital, doctor Saney linked the outbreak to poor hygiene and lack of clean water in the area.
“We have noticed symptoms of cholera which is a normal infection and as we continue treating the patients they are getting better as we are giving them antibiotics and lots of fluids,” he said.
He said they have set up preventive measures including chlorination and disinfection of solid and liquid waste within the village to curb the spread of the disease.
Cholera is transmitted through contaminated drinking water and causes acute diarrhoea,
This spread is accelerated by poor hygiene practices and inadequate sanitation and the disease can only be halted by improving hygiene conditions.
