Electoral Commission Rejects Banadir District Appointments Amid Ongoing Poll Process

Storyline:National News

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has firmly rejected the recent appointment of new district commissioners for Dayniile and Shangaani, announced a day earlier by Banadir Regional Administration Governor, Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Mungaab).
In a press statement, the commission said the country is currently in a sensitive electoral phase, during which no administrative changes affecting district leadership are permitted. It warned that such actions could directly interfere with the integrity and conduct of the electoral process.
The commission emphasized that the appointments contravene the Provisional Constitution of Somalia as well as national electoral laws, particularly provisions that prohibit interference in local governance structures during active election operations.
It further noted that district commissioners in the Banadir region are presently engaged in critical electoral duties, including the preparation and implementation of the process, and should not be subject to replacement at this stage.
The NIEBC cautioned that any unlawful actions risk undermining both the transparency of the elections and public trust in the process, urging all authorities to adhere strictly to the constitution and the rule of law.
