GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, has concluded her diplomatic mission after nearly a year in the country, receiving a farewell from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

During a farewell meeting at Villa Somalia, President Mohamud commended Ambassador Di Mauro for her service and contribution to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the European Union.

“The President commended Ambassador Di Mauro for her dedicated service and invaluable contribution to strengthening the longstanding partnership and collaboration between Somalia and the European Union,” the Presidency said in a statement.

Di Mauro officially began her tenure in Somalia on September 3, 2025, after presenting her credentials to President Mohamud. At the time, she pledged to deepen the European Union’s engagement with Somalia and further strengthen cooperation on peacebuilding, security, governance and development.

Throughout her assignment, the EU remained one of Somalia’s leading international partners, providing support for security sector reform, humanitarian assistance, institution-building and economic development. The bloc also continued backing the country’s stabilization efforts through its diplomatic engagement and assistance programmes.

Di Mauro leaves Somalia after being appointed Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS), marking the end of her tenure as head of the EU Delegation to Somalia.
