Former President Mohamud sworn in as life member of the House of the People

Immediate former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was today sworn in as a member of the Lower House of the Federal Parliament.

Mohamud who lost to President Mohamed Farmaajo was sworn in by House Speaker Osman Jawaari in line with the country’s Constitution which grants former presidents life memberhip to the House.

Article 64 (4) of the Constitution states that any person who becomes the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia shall become a life member of the House of the People after leaving the office of President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

However the same clause sets a caveat denying the chance presidents who were removed from office before end of term having grossly violated the constitution. Article 92 of the Constitution grants the Federal Parliament powers to impeach the President should he/she be accused of treason, or gross violation of the Constitution or the laws of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
