INEBC Delays Galmudug and Banadir Local Elections to Allow More Preparations

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission (INEBC) has postponed key local elections in Galmudug State and the Banadir region, saying the delay will allow political organisations and election officials more time to complete preparations.

In a statement, the commission said the decision followed consultations with registered political organisations and a review of requests concerning the readiness of the electoral process.

Under the revised timetable, elections for Galmudug’s House of Representatives and local councils, originally scheduled for July 20, will now be held on July 25, the commission said.

The electoral body also announced changes to the schedule for Banadir Regional Council elections, citing requests from political organisations and an assessment of candidates’ preparedness and electoral procedures. It did not immediately specify a new date for those polls.

The commission urged the Federal Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation to accelerate training and civic education programmes for prospective local council members to ensure they are prepared for their responsibilities once elected.

The postponement comes as Somalia pushes ahead with plans to expand direct elections as part of broader political reforms aimed at replacing the country’s long-standing clan-based indirect electoral system. The process has, however, remained contentious, with some opposition groups and several federal member states questioning aspects of the government’s electoral roadmap and calling for broader political consensus.

Despite those disagreements, the electoral commission said it remained committed to organising elections that are free, transparent, inclusive and peaceful, in accordance with Somalia’s electoral laws.

The revised schedule is expected to give political organisations additional time to finalise candidate preparations and comply with electoral requirements ahead of the vote.
