Israeli Ambassador Presents Credentials to Somaliland President Irro
GOOBJOOG NEWS|HARGE: Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, also known as Irro, has received the diplomatic credentials of Michael Lotem, Israel’s newly appointed ambassador to Somaliland, in a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Hargeisa.
The presentation of credentials marks a new development in relations between Somaliland and Israel, with both sides expressing their intention to deepen cooperation across several areas.
During the ceremony, Irro described the move as an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two sides.
He said his administration sought to establish partnerships with Israel in political affairs, trade, investment, security, defence and technology. He also highlighted Somaliland’s strategic location along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
For his part, Lotem said he would work to strengthen relations between the two sides, particularly in security, defence, trade, investment, healthcare and education.
The development raises questions about Somaliland’s authority to independently establish diplomatic relations and enter into international agreements, given that Somaliland remains part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, whose foreign policy affairs fall under the mandate of the federal government in Mogadishu.
The presentation of diplomatic credentials is a formal step in establishing diplomatic engagement between the two sides, although it does not in itself constitute international recognition of Somaliland’s independence by other states.
