Massive Inferno Razes Down Market in Jigjiga Town

GOOBJOOG NEWS | JIGJIGA: A massive inferno Monday night razed down a major market in Jigjiga town causing extensive damage to property and displacing several residents from their homes.

According to officials from the Somali Regional Government of Jigjiga, the fire erupted in front of a local hotel, razing down businesses and shops in the area.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to journalists said the fire spread rapidly to residential areas forcing residents to evacuate and that rapid response by the local fire brigade contained the fire and stopped it from spreading to other parts of the town.  

The officials said that preliminary assessment indicated that the fire could have been caused by an electric fault although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.
