GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Political tensions were reported in Mogadishu on Sunday after a planned opposition demonstration failed to take place, amid heightened security measures and restrictions across key areas of the city.

Opposition figures had intended to hold a public gathering in parts of Mogadishu, but the event was called off after authorities enforced security precautions, including the closure of several major roads and the designation of permitted assembly areas.

Former Somali President Shariif Sheekh Axmed said authorities had initially approved the use of Koonis Stadium for the gathering, but later withdrew permission for access to the venue. He claimed that all previously designated locations were subsequently restricted, preventing the opposition from proceeding with its plans to address supporters.

In a separate statement, MP Gama’diid said the government had effectively succeeded in preventing the rally from going ahead, crediting security operations for halting opposition movements. “The arrangements we were given proved unworkable. We were ready to proceed, but even Koonis Stadium was denied to us,” he said.

Federal Government officials have consistently maintained that all public gatherings must comply with national security guidelines, emphasizing the need to preserve stability and prevent any activities that could disrupt public order in the capital.

The authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding security at a time when Somalia continues to navigate sensitive political discussions related to elections and governance reforms.

The situation remained calm across Mogadishu following the developments, with security forces maintaining a visible presence in key areas.
