New Leadership Takes Over Somalia’s Refugee and Displacement Agency
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has appointed a new head of its national refugee and displacement agency, as the federal government moves to strengthen support for vulnerable communities.
Deputy Interior Minister Abdihakim Ashkir oversaw the handover ceremony in Mogadishu, where Liibaan Cabdi Cigaal officially assumed office from outgoing chief Axmed Xuseen Cilmi.
Speaking at the event, Ashkir underscored the agency’s critical role in assisting refugees and internally displaced persons, calling for improved service delivery and stronger coordination.
He urged the new leadership to prioritise accountability, enhance institutional performance and accelerate support to vulnerable groups.
Somalia continues to face significant displacement driven by conflict and climate-related shocks, with authorities and humanitarian partners working to expand assistance and improve living conditions for affected populations.
