Northeastern State Administration Appoints Inquiry Panel into Adhicaddeeye Civilian Killings
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Northeastern State administration leader has appointed an independent committee to investigate the recent killing of civilians in Adhicaddeeye, in a move aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding one of the region’s deadliest recent security incidents.
In a presidential decree issued on Sunday, regional leader Abdiqadir Ahmed Aw-Ali said the five-member panel would investigate the attack and recommend measures to improve accountability and security.
The decision followed security briefings presented to the regional leadership and was made in accordance with the administration’s constitutional provisions, the decree said.
The committee has been tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the killings and reviewing the actions taken by security agencies before, during and after the incident. It is also expected to identify any shortcomings in the response and recommend measures to help prevent similar attacks in the future.
The panel is chaired by Abdi Hassan Mohamed and includes cabinet ministers and members of the regional legislature.
No timeline was given for the completion of the investigation or the publication of its findings.
The Adhicaddeeye killings have heightened concerns over civilian safety in parts of northeastern Somalia, where disputes involving local communities, clan tensions and security threats have periodically erupted into violence. While authorities have not publicly released full details of the incident, the attack prompted renewed calls from residents and community leaders for a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
The establishment of the inquiry comes as Somali authorities at both the federal and regional levels face increasing pressure to strengthen civilian protection and improve responses to security incidents. Investigations of this nature are often seen as a key test of the willingness of authorities to establish the facts surrounding violent incidents and restore public confidence in state institutions.
The regional administration said it expects the committee to carry out its work independently and provide recommendations that could help strengthen security and accountability in the aftermath of the Adhicaddeeye attack.
