Opposition politicians file case against constitutional review in Puntland

GOOBJOOG NEWS|GAROWE: A section of politicians in Puntland has filed a petition in the state Supreme Court seeking to bar parliament from reviewing the constitution.

The politicians led by Guled Salah Barre confirmed to the media that they had filed the case challenging the decision by the state parliament. Barre said he and his team met with the Constitutional Court chairman Hassan Yusuf Nur Thursday morning adding that he pledged the court’s attention to the matter once all procedures are concluded.

The move follows heightened tensions and fighting in the capital Garowe last month following a decision by parliament to open the constitution for review.

The opposition has accused President Abdullahi Deni of seeking to extend his stay in office through constitutional change. His term ends in January 2024.
