GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Ports and Maritime Transport minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has congratulated Somalis at home and abroad as the country marks the 65th anniversary of the independence of the former British Somaliland on 26 June 1960.

In a message to commemorate the occasion, the minister paid tribute to the men and women who fought for Somalia’s independence, praying for those who lost their lives during the liberation struggle and urging citizens to honour their sacrifices.

He also praised members of Somalia’s security forces, saying they continue to defend the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity amid ongoing security challenges.

The minister described 26 June as a defining moment in Somalia’s history, noting that it marked the first time the blue flag with the white five-pointed star was raised over free Somali territory. He said the occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving national unity and safeguarding the country’s independence.

Nur called on Somalis to reflect on the value of freedom and to remain committed to efforts aimed at strengthening peace, stability and national cohesion.

The anniversary commemorates the independence of the former British Somaliland on 26 June 1960, five days before it united with the former Italian-administered territory to form the Somali Republic on 1 July 1960. The dates are widely observed as key milestones in Somalia’s modern history.
