GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Preparations for Somalia’s 66th Independence and Unity Day celebrations have gathered pace as national performing arts groups took part in a cultural competition organised ahead of the annual commemorations.

Members of the national committee overseeing events marking June 26 Independence Day and July 1 Somali Unity Day attended the competition, which featured performances by leading artistic groups including Hiddo, Danan and Banaadir Region’s cultural ensemble.

The event forms part of a broader programme of activities leading up to the celebrations, which commemorate British Somaliland’s independence on June 26, 1960, and the subsequent union between the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland on July 1, 1960, that created the Somali Republic.

Organisers said cultural performances will play a central role in this year’s commemorations, highlighting Somalia’s heritage, national identity and the historical significance of the independence struggle.

Government officials overseeing the preparations said final arrangements are underway for events expected to take place across the country, with government institutions, artists and community groups participating in activities marking one of the most important periods in Somalia’s national calendar.

The annual celebrations typically feature cultural performances, public ceremonies and tributes to the leaders and citizens who contributed to Somalia’s independence and unity more than six decades ago.
