GOOBJOOG NEWS|HARGEISA: Somaliland President Muse Bihi has rubbished claims that he will extend his term as the region’s president, adding that his term would only be extended if the Somaliland people agreed.

Speaking in the Erigavo region of Sanaag last night, President Bihi added that he was in no way opposed to the holding of elections, promising that plans to hold elections were within the legal time framework.

Regarding the crack-down on anti-government protests organized by the Wadani and UCID parties, President Bihi said that he had great respect for all parties but then his decision was informed by the need to maintain security and prevent destruction of property.

Bihi’s statement comes days after the opposition staged a protest in Hargeisa, accusing him of trying to extend his term and planning to postpone elections. The rally turned violent after police attacked the protesters, and at least ten people were injured and scores others were detained.
